Shadd Health and Business Centre team races for charity
Montreal - Tuesday, September 10, 2024

The 19th annual  BDO Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat Race took place on Saturday, September 7 in Lachine. A total of 650  paddlers from all across Montreal and all walks of life, raced to raise money for Cedars CanSupport, an organization that provides free, bilingual, support services to people who are undergoing cancer treatments at the MUHC, as well as to their family members.

One of the teams was from the English ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½’s Shadd Health and Business Centre in NDG. The Shadd/Baton Rouge Firebreathers raised close to $15,000 in 2023.  This year, they decided to aim a little higher and brought in $19,175.  Teacher John Millar, one of the organizers, says he hopes the donations don’t stop there! They can be sent in until  December 31 by visiting the Cedars Cancer  Foundation website at  and donating to the team.

The crew of Shadd students from the  accounting and PAB programs were the driving engine of the  boat. "Although we finished last, the students realized that teamwork and supporting cancer patients was of real educational value," said Mr. Millar. "Thanks to a comedy show in early May by Joe Cacchione and the generous donation from Domenic Aversa and his Baton Rouge restaurants, we were able to surpass our goal."
